Laredo Residents Build Community Sports Programs in Overlooked Neighborhoods

The Laredo Parks and Recreation board approved construction of three new multi-use fields at the Riverbend site on July 10 after residents collected 1,800 signatures and $180,000 in small donations.
The decision comes as city data shows youth sports enrollment has risen 28 percent since 2024, driven by families seeking low-cost activities near their homes rather than traveling to distant complexes.
Neighborhood groups lead the push
Volunteers from the Los Presidentes neighborhood association cleared overgrown lots along Zapata Highway last spring to create temporary practice space. They partnered with the South Laredo Youth League, which runs after-school sessions at the former Del Mar Boulevard elementary site now used for weekend clinics. Both groups focused on adding shaded benches and water stations before asking the city for permanent upgrades.
Residents in the nearby San Agustin area followed the same pattern, converting a vacant lot behind the old fire station into a soccer pitch that opened for use in May. The league now schedules 14 teams there each week, drawing players from households within a two-mile radius.
Numbers behind the effort
A June 2026 Laredo Parks report recorded 4,500 participants in city-supported programs, compared with 3,200 two years earlier. Average program fees stand at $15 per month, with waivers available for families earning under $35,000 annually. Construction on the new Riverbend fields is set to begin August 15 and finish by early December, according to the approved timeline.
City staff will hold an open house at the Zapata Highway location on July 18 from 9 a.m. to noon for residents to review layout plans and sign up for the first season. Registration opens online the following Monday through the parks department portal.
